Why is GICS important in the financial world?
GICS offers a standardized language for investment decisions. It makes it possible to compare companies with similar business models - regardless of country, stock exchange or company size. Many investment funds, indices and research houses use GICS as a basis for portfolio construction, risk analysis or market screening. This means that it also makes sense for private investors to use this structure as a guide.

Who decides which GICS sector a company is assigned to?
The allocation is made by the index providers MSCI and S&P Dow Jones on the basis of a company's main business segment. The decisive factor is the segment from which the company generates the majority of its sales or operating profit. Changes in the business model or strategic realignments can lead to a company being assigned to a different industry or even a different sector.

What is meant by the GICS sector "Materials"?

The GICS "Materials" sector comprises companies that are active in the production, processing or refinement of raw materials. This includes industries such as chemicals, building materials, paper & forest products and the entire metallurgical and mining industry. The sector is highly cyclical and is particularly sensitive to economic fluctuations and changes in global demand.

Which companies typically belong to the Materials sector?
Typical representatives are international groups from the areas of chemicals production (e.g. BASF), precious metal mining (e.g. Barrick Gold), building materials production (e.g. Heidelberg Materials) or industrial gases (e.g. Linde).
